New York State has introduced changes to its laws regarding Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW). The changes have brought some major changes to the training requirement that will impact both people who want to renew their license or want to apply for a new one. The Rochester Personal Defense is now offering training programs in the form of an 18-hour CCW course in Palmyra, NY.

Rochester Personal Defense 18-Hour NYS CCW Course in Geneseo, NY

Rochester Personal Defense is offering two packages for this 18-hour concealed carry course:

Standard Package:

The standard package includes:
  1. A free session to review your completed NY State Pistol License application.
  2. Submission of application to the county clerk.
  3. A professionally printed book.
  4. Use of handgun, ammo, and all range access fees.

Enhanced Package: ($50 Additional)

The 18-Hour NYS CCW Requirement

The updated law by the New York State has made the completion of an 18-hour training course a compulsion for increased public safety. The curriculum is standardized across the state.

18-Hour CCW Course – The Key Components

The course is divided into the following two main segments:

Classroom Instruction (16 Hours)

A major part of the course is about classroom education: It covers topics like:
  • Safety and Storage: Preventing accidents through proper handling, storage techniques, and safe practices.
  • Force Laws Application: New York’s legal framework’ detailed examination for self-defense and the justifiable use of force.
  • Awareness about the Situation: Recognizing and avoiding potential threats before they escalate.

  • Maintenance of Firearms: Basic care and maintenance to ensure firearms function safely and reliably.

Live-Fire Training (2 Hours)

  • Handling of Weapon: Safe loading, unloading, and operating procedures.
  • Fundamentals of Shooting: Grip, stance, aiming, and trigger control.
  • Drills on Accuracy: Ensuring participants can hit targets reliably under controlled conditions
  • Assessment of Performance: Evaluating proficiency to meet state standards.

Important Considerations

As of March 20, 2024, the course completion certificate is accepted in the following counties:

1- ALL 5 NYC Boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island), Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Dutchess, Erie, Genesee, Jefferson, Livingston, Madison, Monroe, Niagara, Onondaga, Ontario, Orange, Orleans, Oswego, Putnam, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Sullivan, Tioga, Tompkins, Ulster, Wayne, Westchester, Wyoming, and Yates county.

2- If you are a current license or permit holder and you DO NOT live in NYC, Westchester, Suffolk, or Nassau counties, you do not have to complete this training course.

3- If you DO live in NYC, Westchester, Suffolk, or Nassau counties, you must complete this training within 1 year from your current recertification date.

  • Federal: 18 U.S.C. § 922(g), makes it unlawful for people falling in certain categories to ship, transport, receive, or possess firearms or ammunition:
  • Convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.
  • Someone who is a fugitive.
  • Someone who is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance (as defined in section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act, codified at 21 U.S.C. § 802).
  • Someone who has been adjudicated as having mental problems or has been to a mental institution.
  • Someone who is an illegal alien.
  • Someone who has been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.
  • Someone who is not a United States citizen.
  • Someone who has a restraining order from a court.
  • Someone who has been convicted of domestic violence.
  • Someone who has a felony, domestic violence conviction, a DWI within 5 years, or any other legal prohibitions on firearms ownership cannot obtain an NYS pistol permit.
  • The applicant will be responsible for his/her county's application fees.
